Herbitual: Five herbs to include in your daily routine

As the weather seasons continue to become more extreme, quick-changing and unpredictable, our health can take a beating. To help alleviate stress the body goes through to maintain and regulate its systems, here are five herbs that you include in your daily routine.

Turmeric
Known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce joint pain, this helpful herb’s key component, curcumin, has been found to improve brain function, memory and mood. Turmeric is flavourful and is one of the easiest herbs to include in your diet.

Try: mixing into rice, sprinkling it on vegetables or making a “golden milk” tea using turmeric with your choice of nut milk, adding ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. You’ll have yourself a cold-and-flu fighting concoction that tastes as amazing as it looks!

Cinnamon
Not only a kitchen staple, cinnamon has also been shown to help keep blood sugar levels stable by lowering glucose levels.  The antioxidants in cinnamon have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help lower your risk of disease.

Try: add a teaspoon or two of cinnamon to your morning coffee or warm oats.

Ginger
High in gingerol, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, studies have found ginger can also help with bloating and nausea as well as lowering blood sugar.

Try: combining fresh ginger and hot water when your stomach is feeling “off,” or add fresh ginger slices to a cold pitcher of water for a flavourful beverage that can kick bloating to the curb.

Echinacea
A popular medicinal herb for its ability to activate the immune system, echinacea is effective against both bacterial and viral infections. Especially useful for infections of the upper respiratory tract such as Laryngitis, Tonsillitis and catarrhal conditions for the nose and sinus.

Hibiscus:
Proven to prevent hypertension, lower blood pressure, reduce blood sugar levels, keep your liver healthy, help with menstrual cramps, depression and aid digestion. Hibiscus is one of the best herbs and is most effective if consumed daily.

Try: Pouring 1 cup boiling water over 1–2 tsp dried flowers. Steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten, if desired. Drink up to 2 cups per day.
